Police learned of the incident around noon Wednesday through a 911 call reporting a car crash in front of 52 Catherine St., said Det. Lt. Matt Clark.
Additional calls reported a shooting victim in the same area, he added.
Responding officers found a vehicle that had been involved in an accident, the driver, a Pawling resident, had been shot once in the leg. He was transported to Vassar Hospital for treatment.
The victim told officers that while stopped, a person jumped in his car, shot him and took his Gucci backpack containing several thousand dollars and then jumped into a maroon SUV-type vehicle and fled the area, Clark said.
The shooting is the second in the city in the past four days.
The first shooting occurred around 5:45 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28 in the area of 11 Edgar St., near Poughkeepsie High School.
In that incident, police found that a 30-year-old man had been shot and was involved in a crash as others rushed him to the hospital. Police found the crash site and loaded the victim into a police car, a firefighter began CPR and he was driven to a local hospital.
Anyone with information on either shooting is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-451-7577.
